The quick six with... Michael Harries

1. How did you become a real estate agent?

I had spent about 10 years working in media (TV and radio) and just felt like a change. I met Richard Young from Caporn Young at a sporting event down south in 2009 and then we reconnected three years later when I was considering a move out of media. I started with Caporn Young in late 2012 and worked there for nine years before accepting the role with Hayden Groves at dethridgeGROVES.

2. What do you enjoy most about your job?

Real estate is an interesting business and there are many things that I enjoy about this job. I think what I enjoy the most is that every day is different. I love the variety of the job, I love selling interesting homes in Freo, meeting and working with great characters and helping people through what is a very big deal – selling or buying their home. I’ve met some great people in my time in real estate.

3. What is the most challenging part of your job?

Managing buyers and sellers in a shifting market is always a challenge, but I think managing your time and emotional state can sometimes be the toughest thing about real estate. It’s a bit like sitting on a rollercoaster!

4. What are you most proud of achieving in your role?

I’m proud that I’ve survived in real estate through some difficult markets! But when you can achieve a really fantastic result for a seller, that for me is very satisfying, and having two very happy parties at the end of a transaction gives me immense pride in the work that I do.

5. We know WA market conditions are strong, what have the last 12 months been like for you on the ground?

Overall, they’ve been great. Witnessing what has happened in the market, post COVID-19 has been quite fascinating. Securing stock has been a challenge but knowing that you have a strong buying pool when you list good properties is very reassuring.

6. What is your best advice for buyers in this market?

Be prepared. Understand that it’s a competitive market. Try to get yourself into the strongest position you can as a buyer and when you find the property you love, don’t muck around, be bold, act quickly and just buy it!
