At just 25 and after only 10 months in the industry, Elliot Briers took out the reiwa.com Rookie of the Year 2021/22 award last year.

We spoke to him about his win and how you go from zero to hero in less than a year.

What made you take up a career in real estate?

Having both parents involved in the property industry meant I’d always had a strong interest in the market and learning the ins-and-outs of how things worked.

I’d just finished a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in property and finance before heading over to the US to interview with a development company in early 2020. What I expected to be a decent stint of living overseas and experiencing work/life over there was cut short by the advent of COVID and I returned to Australia. I thought it would blow over pretty quickly, so my parents suggested coming back to Kalgoorlie and working for my Dad’s building company in the meantime.

Obviously things didn’t bounce back as quickly as first thought and after being in the building game for while I decided I wanted to give real estate a good go and completed my sales registration in May 2021.

What do you enjoy about working in real estate?

I really enjoy bringing a “no-fuss” approach to what may be a pretty confusing and overwhelming process for a lot of people. Once you’re able to connect with a client and earn their trust, the rest of the process can move smoothly with just a bit of organisation and constant communication.

I also like the flexibility, in that you’re able to get out what you put in.

What is your advice to others thinking about a career in real estate?

You’ve got to be motivated, set goals and believe in what you do. You need to want to help people achieve a common goal and love talking/living the property market day-in and day-out.

You also need to know your market and believe in it. I’m passionate about Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the complex property market that we’ve got. I live here, I’m part of the community and I’ve bought property here.

It’s important to get some training and possibly a mentor to help pave the way when trying to wrap your head around things. You should always be learning and looking at ways to improve. I’ve been very lucky; growing up around real estate gave me a decent understanding of the industry and I’ve also got Mum who can share her knowledge and experience.

Make sure you understand the good and the bad about this career choice. There is a lot of hard work and it can often be outside regular “nine-to-five” hours. You need to be prepared to be available to clients at most times of day and night. I think it’s also important that people understand the power your mobile phone has and how big a part of your life it will become when joining the industry.

How did you feel about being named reiwa.com Rookie of the Year?

When I started selling, I had no expectation or idea of winning an award. It was probably 4-5 months in when I first realised it was potentially something I could take out, which from there forced my goals to increase and kept me motivated and on track. I’d been keeping an eye on the results in the lead up and knew it was going to be close, so it was fantastic to hear my name called out on the night.

The whole family came down for the Awards, we had two tables, and it was great to have their support. I remember going to the REIWA Awards with Mum when she was named top agent ‘back in the day’, so it was particularly special to have her there to celebrate with me.

What’s next?

I was also named Master Salesperson at the reiwa.com Awards, so I aim to maintain that and just keep learning and building my business and client base.

I think Mum has begun to forecast a bit of a 10-year plan and has hopes for me to take over the family business at some point. Time will tell and I look forward to seeing how things play out.
